Diving in Colombia

In the following article we would like to present a small adventure report of one of our colleagues of Neptuno and a report about the nice possibilities of diving in Colombia. Diving is possible at the Pacific and the Caribbean Ocean. One of the best known Diving-spots in Colombia can be found in Taganga, a village close to Santa Marta. Whoever wants to learn to dive will be able to do so for better value for money than probably anywhere else in the world. All the diving centres are either PADI- or SSI certified, which are the two competing diving regulatory organisations – though they both recognize the other’s certificates. Diving in the Caribbean Sea will take place close to Parque Tayrona, where the depth and difficulty of the dive sites vary.

The schools offer all the standard courses for beginners and advanced divers, but also dive excursions for already certified divers. The standard and quality of both equipment and staff vary, so it is wise to choose a school by simply going for a walk in Taganga and seeing for yourself which school is the right one for you. It is important to find an instructor you feel comfortable with and to find a school where English is spoken. Some schools hire foreign staff for the purpose of offering courses in different languages. All diving excursions are adventurous and there is so much to see – the water is warm and there are beautiful fish all around. All courses and excursions are organized similarly and everything feels very personal. Your best bet will be to ask how big the groups are and how many dives are included. You quickly get to know the other divers, because compared to the diving in places of mass tourism is such as Thailand where you start your trip from a large ship, diving tourism in Colombia is still developing and you are very likely to leave the bay in a small boat with no more than 8 people.
